Three lavenders, three personalities

Lavender remains the most renowned and widely used essential oil.

At first glance, Fine Lavender, Lavandin, and Aspic Lavender seem very close: gray-green foliage, purple spikes, a scent immediately associated with Provence, and a remarkable adaptation to the sun and dry soils. However, as you get closer, each reveals its own silhouette and character.

The Fine Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is the most delicate. Its plant remains relatively compact, with fine, narrow leaves and generally simple flower stems, ending in a purple spike. Its flowering is also one of the earliest, usually from mid-June to early July in the south of France.

The Lavandin (Lavandula hybrida) is naturally more vigorous. A hybrid of Fine Lavender and Aspic Lavender, it forms large rounded clumps and long, branched flower spikes, giving the fields that dense and spectacular appearance. Its flowering mainly extends from late June to late July.

The Aspic Lavender (Lavandula latifolia) is distinguished by its broader leaves and branched flower spikes. Its color is often softer and its scent fresher. Later blooming, it mainly flowers from July to August.
